Next Iconic Design: weVolve

The next iconic collection design coming from Chop Shop will be
“weVolve”. A collection of iconic simians from various sources of
popular culture. This grouping includes references from children’s
entertainment, film, television, cartoons, comics, video games and a
few toys to round the collection out.

We are going to try to post at least one icon a day until the design
is available for purchase on the site… so watch this space or
subscribe to our feed to follow the releases.

HOW Slides: Web Design For Non-Web Designers

Last week I presented at the HOW Design Conference Denver, CO. Our
objective for HOW was to present well-formed technique, design
solutions and inspiration to designers looking to work online. The
challenge at hand being to convince a packed room of talented yet
overstimulated pro's that the web is not as complicated/different as
they are often led to believe. As promised, I have posted the Web Design For Non-Web Designers presentation online. (That was the link right there)

HTML5 was selected as the presentation engine because it was seemingly
the right time to do so. A lot of designers/developers were inspired
by the HTML5 slides built by Marcin Wichary & Ernest
Delgado, our goal was to add some web fonts and make it look nice.
Over the years I have used Powerpoint, Keynote and Flash to build out
often elaborate presentations, but now I am quite content trying to
push the HTML5 & JavaScript slides as far as possible. If there is
continued interest I can post more information about building the
presentation itself.

On the way back from Denver, I made some additions to the slides:

  • Removed the PDF links, replacing them with Shadowbox.js galleries.
  • Quickly added a print.css file, which means it will look nice when you hit print.
  • Enabled the display of inline notes, just hit the 2 key (on a slide with notes).
  • Cleaned up the copy a bit, added more resource links.
  • Trimmed down the file size a bit. There is always room for more optimization.

The HOW Design Conference is a force for good, and I don’t often say such things
about big conferences. The attendees, speakers (and yes sponsors) are
a humble & talented group. Huge thanks to the folks at HOW and
everybody who stopped me to say hello and talk shop.

Chop Shop is @ PhillyCon

We are at Philadelphia Comic Con 2010 Wizard World Convention until Sunday. While we are
here, we thought we might set up a table and some chairs to sit for a
while. On top of that, we even decided to bring some tshirts and
posters along with us to decorate the place a bit. We also brought a
whole bunch of extra copies in boxes under the table and word has it
that if slip us a $20 or something like that — we might take a liking
to you and hand you some tee or poster of your choice.

But you didn’t hear it from me.

2 Robot Tees in a Tin for Fathers Day

The Chop Shop Store in the Makers Market / Boing Boing Bazaar is selling two of their popular robot tees in a tin box for $40. Ideally it comes with 1 adult sized weRobot tee (men or women) and 1 children’s weRobot sized tee (onesies, toddlers & kids), but really any robot themed tee would work!

Pictured above are some details from the weRobot design. It is worth noting that only the toddler and onesies come in the version seen at top which only features 25 icons of “friendly” robots. Kids sizes feature the same art as the grown-up version with nasties included (seen lower left).

If the robot featured on the tin itself seems familiar to you… it is likely to be because you own a copy of They Might Be Giants first music disc for kids, “No!” (seen above, third in the group). The disc art as well as all the interactive videos included on the CD-ROM component were the brain-child of The Chopping Block. A New York based design studio specializing in web design and multimedia since 1996.
